Talk #1: Data Governance and Trends in Protecting Sensitive Data

A number of newsworthy trends are highlighting the growing recognition of risks of exposing individuals’ personal and private information. The numbers and sizes of data breaches are exploding along with emerging indignance over corporations using and selling what is believed to be personal or private information have motivated the creation of a growing inventory of global regulations address the need to secure and protect individuals’ personal and private data. In this talk we will discuss data sensitivity, concepts of information risk, along with trends and ideas for instituting data governance techniques to improve overall data protection while reducing the constraints presumed to be imposed by data policies.

Talk #2: Data Catalogs for Data Curation

“Curation” is the process of assembling, organizing, and managing a collection of objects. By extension, data asset curation is the process of assembling, organizing, and managing a collection of data assets. We should adjust this definition, however, to account for context and purpose within a community of data consumers, since data assets that are not shared (or positioned to be shared) would not be subjected to data curation. Therefore, a better definition (or description) of data asset curation would be the process of assembling, organizing, and managing a collection of data assets for the purpose of expanding data accessibility and sharing among a community of data consumers. In this talk, we will explore ideas and methods that help achieve the objectives of data asset curation and how data catalogs can support the process of data curation.
